dc.description.abstract Letters of General Joseph R. Hawley to Charles Dudley Warner, The Hartford Daily Times, December 04, 1929. Events moved rapidly and in the direction Hawley desired. Balancing the books of the Press for the twelve months showed the paper had an even better year than Hawley hoped and far better than his partners dreamed possible. That made it easy for him, at the annual meeting, to press the matter of engaging Warner, to which the partners agreed. Hawley, who had wanted Warner in Hartford for a friend and associate ever since he came here in 1849, was overjoyed. On January 19th, 1860, he wrote to Warner.  en_US
