dc.description.abstract Letters of General Joseph R. Hawley to Charles Dudley Warner, The Hartford Daily Times, December 10, 1929. Then came the disastrous battle of Bull Run. It was fought on the last day of Hawley’s three months enlistment. The correspondence makes no mention of it. However, it is known that Hawley’s rifle did not participate in the pell-mell retreat of the Union forces. They withdrew in good order and with ranks intact. Following the engagement, Hawley was mustered out. The young captain was specially mentioned for good conduct on the field by his commanding officer. en_US
