Abstract

Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Western Auto and Beauty Shop, 212 and 214 E. Screven, Quitman, Brooks County, Ga., 1981. Rectangular two story building, flat roof. Brick. Segmented arch windows on 2nd floor. Decorative brick work along parapet. Western Auto storefront is modernized. Right storefront is original. Transom over door and display window. Good condition. Commercial - saloon and warehouse. Date of Construction: c. 1875-1880. "Saved from a fire in 1875," because it was a brick building. A general store here from 1895-1912. Later a feed & seed store, and a music store. Significant as part of a potential National Register district, a downtown district of late 19th and early 20th century buildings along Screven St., both north and south.
