Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Carter Department Store, 205 E. Screven St., Quitman, Brooks County, Ga., 1981. Dept. store and offices upstairs. Two story brick building of rectangular plan. Flat roof. Segmented arched windows (1/1 lights) on second floor. Two entrances, each doorway set in an alcove with display windows. Fair condition. Date of Construction: 1895. 1895 - grocery store. 1899 - J.O. Lewis Hardware. 1900 - grocery & Masonic Hall on second floor. 1912 - grocery. Significant as part of a potential National Register district, a downtown district of mostly 19th century buildings along Screven St.
