Abstract
This newsletter profiles Thomas Leland Knight detailing his life's journey from financial hardship in Georgia to a new beginning in Florida. Born in Berrien County, Georgia, Leland initially farmed with his wife Lillie Sirmons. He entered into a ten-year partnership with his older brother Mansfield, jointly acquiring land and incurring debt. Their agricultural ventures were severely impacted by the boll weevil infestation between 1914 and 1916, forcing them into less profitable crops and deeper debt. The financial strain, compounded by the tragic death of their infant daughter Aline in 1919, led Leland and Lillie to leave Georgia for Sarasota, Florida in 1923 to escape the "shadows of their Georgia past". In Florida, Leland found stability as a caretaker at The Oaks estate for 18 years, followed by a position as head custodian at Woodrow Wilson Jr. High in Tampa. He lived out his remaining years in this role, eventually dying from a massive heart attack in May 1949, and was buried back in Georgia beside Aline.
