Abstract
This newsletter details the Civil War pension papers of Private Francis Marion Shaw, a Confederate veteran from Georgia. Shaw was severely wounded on July 6, 1864, at Cedar Keys, Florida, leading to the amputation of his right arm four days later. Unlike Union veterans who received federal pensions, Confederate veterans in Georgia did not receive any benefits until 1879. Shaw, often known as "One-arm Marion," received a one-time grant of $60 in 1879 for an artificial arm that he reportedly never acquired. From 1889 to 1907, he successfully applied for and received a Disabled Soldier's Pension of $100 annually, totaling $1860 over 28 years. His pension applications contained some date inconsistencies regarding his wound. The newsletter highlights that his financial status likely precluded him from later "Indigent Soldier's" benefits, and his wife, Rachel, passed away before him, thus not receiving widow benefits. The publication also promotes the upcoming 20th Annual Shaw-Allen Reunion.
