Abstract

This newsletter primarily profiles Collis Chancery Allen, a grandson of Francis Marion Shaw, detailing his journey from farming in Georgia to establishing a successful lifelong career as a barber in Florida. Born in Nashville, Georgia, Collis, like many others, migrated to Florida in the 1920s and 1930s, enticed by economic prospects after the boll weevil infestation severely impacted Georgia's cotton industry and diminished available farmland. He moved to St. Petersburg, Florida, by 1938, where he eventually opened his own barber shop, taking immense pride in his work and his home. The publication also features his youngest sister, Mittie Irene Allen , highlighting her role as a lifelong caregiver. Mittie remained unmarried, dedicating herself to caring for her parents until their deaths, then moving in with Collis in Florida before returning to Georgia to continue her professional caregiving, embodying a quiet heroism.
