Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Quitman [360] 408 E. Screven, Valdosta, Ga. December 1980. Two story, red brick building. Flat roof. Stone foundation. Fanlights over double front doors. Brick pilasters with acanthus leaves on capitals. Marble cornice around top w/ dentil range. Large arched sash windows with 10/12 lights. Fanlights and keystone. Also lintel windows on sides. Decorative lampposts of wrought iron at front. Good condition. Date of Construction: c. July, 1916. Built at a cost of $50,000. Brooks County had the first rural route in Georgia and the second in the nation with E.D. Ponder, Jr. as mail carrier. Significant as part of a potential National Register historic district, a downtown district of late 19th and early 20th century buildings along Screven St.
