Abstract

This newsletter profiles Chester David Shaw, Jr. the only child of the wealthy and charismatic Chester David Shaw, Sr., whose life was profoundly shaped by his father's legacy. Young C.D.'s life was irrevocably altered at age six when his father tragically died in 1912 from peritonitis after swallowing a quail bone, leading to a strained relationship between his mother and the Shaw family. Raised by his mother and stepfather, Newton Futch, C.D. later pursued a diverse career, including operating a drugstore in Miami with his brother-in-law, working as a tobacco grader, and then as a construction contractor after being deemed physically unacceptable for World War II service due to an eye injury. He married Mary Louise Dickson in 1924, with whom he had one daughter, Betty Jean, and remained married until Louise's sudden death from a heart attack in 1972. C.D. Shaw, Jr. himself died in 1978, suffering severe burns in a hospital fire.
