Abstract

This newsletter, serves to honor John Moore and Nancy Osteen Moore, the parents of Rachel Moore Allen Shaw, by detailing their history and the story of their grave site. John and Nancy were pioneering settlers in South Georgia, first in Wayne County from 1803-1805, then Ware County from 1817 to 1829, and finally settling in Lowndes County in 1833, where they built a log house and lived the remainder of their lives on a 490-acre tract. John expanded his farming operations to over 2,500 acres. Their burial site, located about a mile from their home on a second 490-acre tract, was likely chosen for a stately live oak tree, and their graves were initially unmarked, requiring their grandson Haley Gardner Moore to dig to find their bones in the late 1920s. Over the decades, their gravesite has been maintained and significantly improved by descendants, including Jerry Franklin Moore who added a marble headstone and concrete slab in the early 1980s, and a volunteer system established after 1992 ensures regular cleaning. A key aspect of this site is the unbroken connection of John and Nancy's descendants to land lot 240, continuing to own and care for the property where they are buried, including their sons Stephen and Irwin who died in the Civil War, and their descendants through Stephen, Amanda and her family, and ultimately Kay Blanton Coleman.
