Letters of General Joseph R. Hawley to Charles Dudley Warner, The Hartford Daily Times, November 15, 1929. Hawley was getting introduced to the world of public speaking, aside from any that he did in college. His introduction to public speaking took place in Earlville, where he gave a temperance address. The speech ultimately won him high praise. He became quite a busy man. He was teaching school, participating in the social life in the community, and he also took up reading. He particularly enjoyed reading Dicken’s Pickwick. Hawley talked about all of this in the letter included in this publication. He wrote to Warner just before midnight on Washington’s birthday.
