Abstract

Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Dixie [207] Ga. Highway 364, Quitman, Ga. December 1980. A small Greek revival cottage. Rectangular plan with gabled roof. Square porch posts. Clapboard siding. Shuttered sash windows with 9/9 lights. Windows in front gable. Set on brick piers. Exterior chimney. Good condition. Date of Construction: c. 1850-1860. The post office was transferred here from Grooverville in February 1879, and the place was named, "Dixie." Significant architecturally - these Greek revival cottages are not easily found in South Georgia. They are very unusual and this is the best example which has been found and it is pre-Civil War.
