Abstract

Letters of General Joseph R. Hawley to Charles Dudley Warner, The Hartford Daily Times, December 24, 1929. Hawley had another chance to get into actual fighting in the capture of the forts before Charleston. Admiral Dupont, in charge of the spring assault on this stronghold, had attempted to run his vessels by the fortifications and bombard the city, but the effort had disastrous results and command was assigned to General Gillmore.
