The Only Confederate Newspaper To Be Published On A Southern Plantation. The Countryman. Tumwold , Putnam County, Georgia. September, 1862. A fascinating weekly Confederate newspaper. It is the only newspaper published on a Southern plantation. The publisher was Joseph A. Turner who published the paper on his plantation Tumwold. This is vol. III, No. 1. 8 pgs. 3 columns. Contents include The Southern National Anthem, Why the Hessian Enlisted In The War, Superior Court News, Killed and Wounded are listed, etc. "One universal acclaim of approbation has gone up from the Southern press in favor of this journal, and from divines, scholars, doctors, lawyers, citizens, and soldiers, have come notes of encouragement to its editor. Nor has this been the only success of The Countryman. Most remarkable of all, has been its pecuniary success, at a time when it would seem ruin to begin the publication of a newspaper at only $1 per annum. A circulation in Virginia, N. Carolina, S. Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Mississippi, Louisiana, Texas and Tennessee, and which would also have reached Kentucky and Missouri, but for the war, has enabled The Countryman already to more than pay expenses and opens a bright future for it, when the clouds of war shall be dispelled, and peace once more smile upon our land." Joseph Turner (1826-1868) was a staunch advocate of African slavery and the Confederacy. The Countryman was published from March 1862 until May 1866 with a brief interruption in the summer of 1865 when Turner was placed under arrest by the United States government. Expected toning. A very fine copy of a scarce Confederate newspaper.
