Abstract

This newsletter profiles Fondren Willie Mitchell Shaw, affectionately known as "Preacher" from an early childhood photograph. Born in a log home in Berrien County, Georgia, he received his formal education at the Pine Grove and Kings Chapel schools, where he met his future wife, Susie Ray, marrying her in 1927. Their early life involved farming Susie's parents' property, frequent moves, and Preacher's varied work including managing a service station in Jacksonville and construction, where he suffered a severe accident. For over two decades, Preacher established a successful career in the feed, seed, and fertilizer business in Nashville, known as a natural-born salesman, buying crops and selling seeds across surrounding counties. A gifted baseball player, especially as a pitcher, he was renowned for his unique style and was recruited by local clubs, playing actively until 1948. He also pursued a political career, successfully running for Berrien County Commissioner in 1951 and serving a term, though he did not win re-election. Preacher suffered two severe heart attacks, one in 1962 and another in 1972, which ultimately led to his death.
