Abstract
This is a copy of an 1836 roster of Georgia Militia Lowndes County Districts.659 and 660. In 1858, these districts became a part of Brooks County and.became known as the Nankin and Morven districts respectively. The original.was found among the papers of the no longer existing Brooks County.Historical Society, having been donated to the Society by Brooks County.native H. Shaffer. No explanation was found as to why the Shaffer family had.this document, or if it were the only one in existence. After exhausting all.available resources to no avail, the Museum contacted Gordon Smith of.Savannah, Ga., who together with his wife, has published a four volume work.on the history of the Georgia Militia "History of the Georgia Militia 1783 -.1861"; The following excerpt from his rely as to why this roster was not officially recorded and instead was in the hands of one the 171 local men called up to meet this emergency.
"As for the rosters themselves, I absolutely concur that they were probably made in.response to a call by the governor (via the adjutant general) for the several commands in Georgia to do so, more especially since the Second Seminole War had opened in December of 1835,and the citizens of Southwest Georgia were in great peril. Certainly they are simply the returns of two general militia companies. They are not, however rosters of soldiers who were in active service in the Creek War of 1836. They are valuable, of course, in enumerating the arms-bearing adult males subject to the General.Militia Laws as residents of their respective company districts. One should be on the lookout for rosters of such units in active service as those.commanded by Cpt. Levi J. Knight and Cpt. Hamilton W. Sharp during the Creek War.of 1836." -- Gordon B. Smith
