Abstract

This issue primarily details the estate of Jeremiah Shaw, Jr., father of sixteen children, including Francis Marion Shaw. It explains his October 31, 1877 will, which appointed his sons William Jasper and Francis Marion as executors. The article highlights his brief second marriage to Sarah L. Howard in 1879, which led to an amended will in 1883 where he expressed his dissatisfaction with her. Following his death on April 7, 1883 (correcting a misprint on his headstone), his sons conducted a personal property sale on May 17, 1883, itemizing the functional possessions of a typical late 1800s farm, with most purchases made by family members. Jeremiah Shaw, Jr. is remembered for his extensive legacy, having fathered sixteen children whose descendants now number in the thousands, and for his deep religious convictions, including being an organizer of the Pleasant Baptist Church.
