Slave trading ships were confiscated for violating laws prohibiting the slave trade. The Charleston port authority, a Mr. Jervey, enforced the law at his own expense and seeks compensation from the state for his efforts. The revenue had been collected by the Savannah port collector Archibald S. Bulloch.
