Abstract

Letters of General Joseph R. Hawley to Charles Dudley Warner, The Hartford Daily Times, December 31, 1929. In February 1864, General Gillmore undertook to extend the union hold on Florida. From Hilton Head he sent out a force under General Seymour to move west from Jacksonville and engage the enemy. They came upon him in force and fought the bloody and disastrous battle Olustee. Hawley acquitted himself like a hero and the Seventh regiment gave him cause for pride.
