Abstract

This newsletter profiles John Thomas "Tommy" Allen, a grandson of Francis Marion Shaw, whose life was characterized by a diverse series of occupations and frequent relocations. Born in Allenville, Georgia, he married Edna Golden in 1908 and together they raised three children. Allen's career began in the grocery business, but he primarily worked in the naval stores (turpentine) industry as a "woodsman" for various companies, which often necessitated moving his family across South Georgia communities. He also served briefly as a rural postal carrier and worked at the Brunswick shipyards during WWI, later finding employment at Moody Air Force Base. Despite the challenges of his itinerant work, he consistently provided for his family, instilling in his children principles of hard work and determination. John Thomas Allen died suddenly from a heart attack on June 20, 1946, at age 59, in his Ray City home, where he and Edna are buried.
