Abstract

This newsletter, titled "Rural Schooling: Early education in the Shaw-Allen family," details the educational experiences of the children and grandchildren of Francis Marion and Rachel Moore Allen Shaw in rural Berrien County, Georgia. Initially, children were often home-taught by their literate parents, with the family Bible used to hone reading skills. Community schools soon emerged, with the Pine Grove Academy (later Pine Grove School) being a prominent institution attended by many Shaw-Allen descendants, including a visibly older Chester D. Shaw around 1894. These rural schools typically operated for 6-7 months annually, accommodating farm work, and often featured one or two rooms where all eight grades were taught by a small number of teachers. They lacked modern amenities like electricity and indoor plumbing, relying on natural light, outhouses, and pot-bellied stoves for heating. Other significant schools mentioned include Knights Academy and the King's Chapel School, which also served as a polling and meeting place. Many of these small, rural schools eventually closed their doors by 1936.
