Abstract

This newsletter profiles Claude Columbus Clements and Maye Belle Allen, two grandchildren of Francis Marion Shaw, whose lives began in rural Georgia and were marked by significant personal and professional journeys. Their relationship was notably challenged by their families' strong objections due to being half first cousins, leading them to elope in 1909. After their marriage, they navigated various occupations and relocations, with Claude working as a streetcar conductor, at an ice company, in the turpentine and lumber industries, and briefly owning a struggling drug store in Ray City, Georgia. They eventually moved to Florida, where Claude became a clerk and pit foreman for a phosphate company before successfully owning and operating a general store in Ft. Meade. Despite battling bladder cancer and undergoing a kidney removal, Claude later worked for the State of Florida Road Department. His life tragically ended in 1946 when he was struck by a gravel dump truck while working. Maye lived nearly 23 years after his death, and their lives together were seen as a testament to their commitment.
