Abstract

This newsletter profiles Burie Webster Clements, Sr., also known as "Buster," a grandson of Francis Marion and Rachel Allen Shaw, detailing his diverse life and career. Born in Adel, Georgia, in 1899, he briefly worked with the Radcliffe Circus in 1918, finding the work demanding before returning home and attempting to join the U.S. Navy Reserves. After marrying Maggie Turner in 1920, they moved to Polk County, Florida, where Burie was employed by the American Agriculture Chemical Company for 19 years, overseeing transportation and safety. He began a significant career in law enforcement in 1922 as a constable in Pierce for 18 years, then served as Chief of Police in Mulberry for five years, where he faced dangerous situations including subduing a prisoner and shooting a burglar. Despite an unsuccessful bid for Polk County Sheriff due to illness, Clements also owned and operated three service stations and served on the Mulberry City Commission. Known for his "common sense style" and trademark bow tie, he passed away in 1960 at age 60 from a heart attack, remembered as a "leader and community builder" who reflected credit on his family.
