August 3, 1962 Mr. Roy McGinty Calhoun, Gerrgla Dear Roy, The campaign is really rolling and picking up in tempo every dayl I am happy to announce that we are staging another big rally in Marietta, Georgia, on Saturday, August 11, at 3:30 P.M. This race has resolved itself where right-thinking Georgians are fighting for sound, progressive government and the preservation of the Georgia we love. My opponent has plenty of money supplied on a practically unlimited basis by the C & S Bank of Atlanta and is supported by the Atlanta newspapers which blanket large areas of our state and is silent on the subject of being backed by Martin Luther King who controls the Negro bloc vote in our larger cities. We most win this race and we will with the help of you and your friends whom I am depending on to turn out enmasse and we will once and for all begin to set things right again in Georgia. This is your personal invitation to meet me in Marietta on August 11, so please be with me and bring several friends. With warm personal MG: vo ROBERT O. ARNOLD P. O. BOX 191 COVINGTON, GEORGIA July 12* 1962 Hon. Carl Sanders Dinkier Plaza Hotel Atlanta* Georgia Dear Carl: I have your letter of July 6th, asking for my support In your campaign for the office of Governor. While you were campaigning for the office of Lieut. Governor* I committed my vote to Marvin Griffin for the office of Governor. I plan to vote for Marvin because of his great interest in education at all levels and because he did so much for the University System of Georgia during the time he served as Governor. I hasten to add that I would not vote for Mr. Griffin if I did not consider him a man of integrity and ability. Pour years of dealing with him as chairman of the Board of Regents led me to this conclusion. I would like to remind you* Carl* that* during the legislative session of i960* I sought your help in defeating a constitutional amendment which I considered would be detrimental to the University System of Georgia. You assured me that you felt as I did and that you would use your efforts to defeat this amendment. When this bill was about to be voted on in the Senate* I came back to you to see if you thought there was any chance of defeating this bill. You informed me that the chance of defeating the bill was hopeless. You also* at this time* explained to me that* although you still felt the amendment should be defeated* it had become "politically expedient" that you vote for the bill because it was going to pass by such a big majority. I am sure that you will recall that I expressed strong disappointment that you did not see fit to vote your convictions on this bill. You will also recall that this amendment was soundly defeated in almost every county in the state. If you are elected to the office of Governor* as a citizen of Georgia* I will do everything I can to help make your administration a successful one. Sincerely* Robert 0. Arnold.
