dc.description.abstract | Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Rural [271] Three miles southeast of Quitman, Valdosta, Ga. December 1980. Two story L-shaped house with multi-gabled roof. Coupled, decorative brackets and pendants. Fluted Doric columns. Wide veranda on first floor and balcony on second floor. Clapboard siding. Sash windows with 6/6 lights - shutters. Transom and sidelights over door. Set on brick piers. Three sided bay at right. Kitchen was once separate from house. Good condition. Date of Construction: began 1850. James Morton and his wife, Sarah moved to Brooks Co. in 1843. The house was constructed from virgin longleaf yellow pine on the place. Architecturally, the house is really considered vernacular architecture, but it is so exceptionally well built; and its pre-civil war age makes it significant. | en_US |
