| dc.description.abstract | Letters of General Joseph R. Hawley to Charles Dudley Warner, The Hartford Daily Times, December 03, 1929. Warner agreed promptly to the arrangement, for on November 14th, 1859 less than two weeks later, Hawley wrote acknowledging an article. Warner apparently was giving serious thought of the possibility of eventually coming to Hartford and joining Hawley on the Press. Hawley was delighted at the idea, of course. On November 14th, Hawley wrote to Warner about politics regarding Abraham Lincoln, his opponent and their famous debates. | en_US |

General Joseph R. Hawley Collection
This is a collection of the Hartford Evening Press that was printed 1929-1930 with a specific section dedicated to the personal correspondence of former Harford Evening Press editor General Joseph R. Hawley (1826-1905). He was the 42nd Governor of Connecticut, a U.S. politician in the Republican and Free Soil parties, a Federal Civil War general, and a journalist and newspaper editor. He served two terms in the United States House of Representatives and was a four-term U.S. Senator.
