Abstract:
Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Quitman [333] 303 Screven St. Valdosta, Ga. December 1980. Quitman Jewelry Co. / Taylor's Office Supplies. Two story rectangular plan brick building. Flat roof. Until very recently (as late as 1978) there was a cast iron cornice along top. Decorative pediments over windows. Tall slender arched windows with 2/2 lights. Jewelry store entrance has small gabled portico with slender ionic columns. Awning is of stained glass. Attached to building with chains. Fair condition. Decorative double doors. Date of Construction: c. unknown. The building was used originally as a jewelry store. The Quitman Jewelry Co. moved there in 1912, and it was at this time that the stained glass awning was attached. Significant architecturally - a fine example of late 19th century commercial architecture with Victorian elements. Significant as part of a potential National Register district, a downtown district of late 19th and early 20th century commercial buildings on Screven - north and south.
