Georgia Architectural and Historic Properties Survey of Quitman [357] 400 E. Screven, Valdosta, Ga. December 1980. Three story rectangular plan brick building. Flat roof. Sash windows with 3/1 lights in bays of two. Stone cornice. Arched street level storefront. Decorative pedimented entrance with cornice and pilasters. Good condition. Has 52 guest rooms. Date of Construction: c. 1927-28. The Hotel Marie was located here until it burned in 1926. The "Community Hotel Corporation" was incorporated to build a new one. At a cost of $100,000, it was opened for business early in 1928. Named after the distinguished John A. Quitman, a great southern statesman. Significant as part of a potential National Register historic district, a downtown district of late 19th and early 20th century commercial buildings along Screven St.
