dc.description.abstract | In this heartfelt letter, dated April 30, 1863, from Coosawhatchie, William W. Knight writes to his wife Mary. He expresses his receipt of Mary's letter dated April 26, mentioning his anxiety and concern for Margaret's illness. Despite acknowledging that Margaret received proper care during her sickness, William regrets not being able to be by her side. He reflects on the challenging conditions they face, including inadequate food supply and difficult circumstances. He expresses his frustration about the scarcity of meat and the poor quality of provisions, noting that some soldiers are left with only bread and sugar. William reflects on the heavy toll of the war and the sacrifices they are making for the cause of liberty. He closes by apologizing for the brevity of his letter, promising to write again soon from Pocatalico, South Carolina. | en_US |
