Abstract:
In Western contemporary paganism, “naked Goddess’’ figures are often used as images of the “Great Goddess”. This holds particularly true in the Western French Wicca which uses ancient Mesopotamian iconography as the representation of Lilith. While those images do represent varied ancient goddesses, for modern devotees she is the demoness Lilith. This paper will look at how scholarship brought by Marija Gimbutas, James Frazer, and Margaret Murray have contributed to this interpretation and how these images are used and interpreted in contemporary cults.
