dc.description.abstract | This newsletter profiles Chester David Shaw, the youngest son of Francis Marion and Rachel Allen Shaw, detailing a life marked by both wealth and tragedy. Born in 1875, Chester became a successful gentleman farmer and businessman, engaging in ventures such as a livery business, naval stores (turpentining), a wholesale feed store, and even a barber shop, often expanding his wealth through these dealings. His personal life, however, was fraught with sorrow, as he married three times: first to Luannie Webb in 1898, who tragically died in 1902; then to Ava E. Moore in 1903, who died less than eight months later in 1904 from typhoid fever; and finally to Mimmie Parrish in 1905, with whom he had his only child. Beyond business, Shaw was active in civic life and pursued a political career, successfully being elected County Treasurer of Berrien County in 1908, though he was defeated in his re-election bid in 1910. Despite his accomplishments and prominent standing in the community, his life was cut short at just 37 years old when he died suddenly on December 13, 1912, from gangrene caused by swallowing a bird bone, leaving behind a legacy of ambition and misfortune. | en_US |
