dc.description.abstract | This newsletter details how several grandsons of Francis Marion and Rachel Allen Shaw prominently served in law enforcement across Berrien and surrounding counties in Georgia and Florida for over three decades. Figures like Frank Allen began as a night marshal in Nashville, responsible for basic duties like lighting streets and herding livestock, but later handled more serious incidents like chicken thefts. Bruner Shaw became known for his persistent pursuit of illicit liquor stills and gambling operations, serving as Chief of Police in multiple towns despite being shot early in his career. Marcus Allen transitioned from farming to police chief and deputy sheriff, handling duties from maintaining dirt streets and conducting property sales to apprehending fugitives and investigating violent crimes, including murder. Lastly, W. A. "Gus" Clements, a later entrant, rose to Chief of Police of Adel and later Deputy Sheriff, receiving professional FBI training and notably capturing a dangerous fugitive, Ray Cash; he was highly respected for his fair and no-nonsense approach. These men, including others like Early Shaw and Cauley Shaw, often began their careers for a living but developed a deep commitment to police work. | en_US |
