This thesis is composed of an action research proposal and a journal ready article. The action research proposal includes a description of the variables, purpose, literature review, and research questions concerning the eleven high school students with specific learning disabilities who were presented a social studies lesson using the optical character recognition software Kurzweil 3000 over a two-week period. As described in the article manuscript, data were collected before, during, and after the intervention using pre-intervention and post-intervention surveys, student interviews, pretests and posttests on social studies content, and teacher observations and recordings. The results reflected an improvement in student achievement as well as favorable attitudes about the use of the technology by both teachers and students. The results were shared with the learning community through a presentation to the faculty and staff, as well as distribution through the monthly district newsletter from the special services office.
