Abstract:
Fascinated with the idea of hybrid classes, several questions needed answering. First of all, with the proliferation of new information sources, Social Network Systems, and innovative technology, could someone teach in a fluctuating environment where tools mutate in an unpredictable manner so quickly? A hybrid class seemed the perfect way to dip a toe into the water of online teaching with the security of one foot on the ground. Because hybrids are such a new classroom form that more teachers encounter, this session will be a discussion of the questions faced when envisioning the class and some of the answers found. Some of the questions include: How do teachers reach students through the new media? Is it possible to use the social rhetoric to move students into defined thought and inquiry? Does visual rhetoric create an understanding as tried and true as written language as a pathway to critical thinking? How can teachers help students to individuate a self (gain a voice)? How is it possible to instill in students an appreciation for clear communication? These questions plus experience developing the first hybrid course up to now will be covered.
